UAB Finishes Regular Season with 5-0 Victory Over Southern Miss

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team wrapped up the regular season with a 5-0 victory over Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field, clinching the series over the Golden Eagles, 3-1.
The Blazers, who finished the regular season with a 29-18 (15-5 C-USA) record, have won the most games in season for the program since 2015.
Prior to the game, UAB honored their six graduating seniors: KK Crocker, Jenna Olszewski, Analyse Petree, Amy Woodham, Emily Kachel and Parker Conrad.
In her final outing, Woodham threw a gem, allowing no runs and striking out six batters in 6.1 innings pitched, while each of the three senior hitters recorded hits in the victory.
For the first three innings of play, the game was a pitchers' duel, with neither team able to plate a run.
The Blazers opened scoring in the bottom of the fourth. The inning started with Faith Hegh getting hit by a pitch and then advancing to second on a wild pitch.
Sierra Frazier scored her with an RBI double to center field.
Petree then reached on an error by the Golden Eagles' pitcher, which scored pinch runner Chloe Bahruth.
Already up 2-0, JoJo Readeaux singled up the middle, sending Petree home.
UAB added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, with back-to-back hits from Petree and Olszewski.
Readeaux plated Petree with a sac fly, earning her second RBI of the game.
Lilly Crowe pushed the final Blazer of the game over the plate with a single to center field that scored Olszewski, giving UAB a 5-0 lead after six.
Woodham got the first batter of the seventh inning swinging, before Conrad entered the circle and delivered the final two outs.
The Blazers finished the regular season with five players batting above .300: Frazier (.387), Hegh (.331), Olszewski (.320), Readeaux (.307) and Petree (.305).
With the victory over Southern Miss, the Blazers locked up the No. 2 seed in the Conference USA Championship and earned the automatic bid into the second round. UAB will take the field Thursday, April 13 at 4:30 p.m. CST and will draw either the No. 3, 6 or 7 seeds as its opponent. The 2021 Championship is hosted by Western Kentucky in Bowling Green.
C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION:
"Championship action gets underway on Wednesday with four first-round matchups starting with No. 5 Middle Tennessee (26-21, 11-8 C-USA East) versus No. 8 UTSA (14-30, 8-12 C-USA West) at noon. Game two will see No. 6 Louisiana Tech (22-29, 10-10 C-USA West) and No. 7 Marshall (19-12, 8-8 C-USA East) meet at 2:30 p.m. Transitioning to the evening slate, No. 4 seed and tournament host WKU (27-12, 10-6 C-USA East) will face off against the winner of game one at 5 p.m. Wednesday's final first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with a matchup between No. 3 Charlotte (30-17, 14-6 C-USA East) and the winner of game two.
Top-seeded North Texas (37-10, 18-2 C-USA West) earned a double bye into Thursday's quarterfinals after landing atop the West Division standings. No. 2 seed UAB (29-18, 15-5 C-USA West) also earned the automatic bid into the second round. The Mean Green will make its first appearance on Thursday at 2 p.m. with potential matchups including the tournament's No. 4, 5 or 8 seeds. The Blazers will take the field for the 4:30 p.m. tilt and will draw either the No. 3, 6 or 7 seeds."
UAB locked up the second seed with a second-place finish in the West Division. C-USA's top-ranked team by RPI, the Blazers won at least 27 games for the first time since 2016 and set the record for home victories at Mary Bowers Field (20). Head coach Joe Guthrie also became the winningest first-year coach in school history."
