UAB Earns C-USA Championship Semifinal Berth With 5-2 Win Over Charlotte

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The UAB softball team advanced to the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship with a 5-2 win over Charlotte on Thursday afternoon.
The Blazers (30-18, 15-5 C-USA) were led at the plate by Analyse Petree, Jenna Olszewski and Olivia Valbak, who each had two hits apiece.
Amy Woodham (10-8) earned her eighth straight win in the circle, while Sarah Cesepedes earned her first save of the season after 3.1 hitless innings of relief to clinch the victory.
Charlotte got started early in the top of the first, hitting back-to-back singles before a walk loaded the bases. With two outs on the board and a 3-2 count, Woodham was able to get the 49ers swinging for the first strikeout of the game and the 125th of her career.
UAB was able to get on the board in the home side of the inning after Petree doubled to left field, scoring Sierra Frazier who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Jenna Olszewski added to the Green and Golds' lead with a single up the middle, scoring Petree and giving UAB a 2-0 advantage after one.
After Woodham was able to get out of another bases loaded jam in the top of the second, KK Crocker hit an RBI double, which scored Valbak, giving UAB a 3-0 lead.
Readeaux plated the fourth run of the game in the bottom of the third, doubling to left center and scoring Olszewski who had hit a two-out triple in the previous at bat.
Olszewski's triple was her fifth of the season, the third-most in a single season in program history.
Charlotte was able cut UAB's 4-0 lead in half in the fourth, scoring two runs.
UAB added on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, after Petree singled the left field, scoring Hegh and giving the Blazers a 5-2 lead in what would turn out to be the final run of the game.
This was the Blazers' first C-USA Championship win since 2018.
UAB will rematch with No. 1-seed North Texas tomorrow at 12 p.m. CST in the semifinals of the tournament. The Blazers' split its four-game series with the Mean Green earlier this season in Denton.
