CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UAB softball team (17-31, 6-16 C-USA) toppled Charlotte (15-33, 6-15 C-USA) in game one of its scheduled doubleheader on Saturday, downing the 49ers in five innings by run rule, 9-0, at Sue M. Daughtridge Field. The victory marked the first run-rule win for UAB since Feb. 9, as the Blazers outmatched Wright State, 10-2, in five innings as well.
The Blazers took the lead in the first inning and never looked back, incrementally building their lead throughout the game. Game two got started as the first inning was completed, but the game had to be postponed due to inclement weather in the top of the second.
The Blazers were led by a pair of freshman at the plate as right fielder Faith Hegh and catcher Sierra Frazier were flawless through the game. Hegh went a team and career high 4-for-4, scoring two runs and adding two RBI as well. Hegh's two doubles moved her into a tie for third in UAB history in doubles in a season with 15 to date. Sierra Frazier posted a line of 3-for-3 with a run scored and a career high 6 RBI in the game, the most RBI for a Blazer since UAB's 2015 season opener against Appalachian State and one of the top marks in program history.
From the circle, sophomore Emily Kachel locked things down for the majority of the game, going four innings while giving up no runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Sophomore Bailie Barnes finished things off in the final frame, going one inning and giving up no runs on one hit with one strikeout.
UAB wasted no time getting going, jumping ahead in the top of the first. Junior infielder Ashton Clem started things off with a one-out single, and Hegh followed that with a double down the left-field line to put both runners in scoring position. That set up a sacrifice fly to left field by Sierra Frazier, scoring Clem for the one-run lead.
Charlotte threatened by loading the bases in the bottom of the second, but it was UAB that continued to put points on the board next, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third. Clem was hit by a pitch for the fourth straight game to lead off the inning, and Hegh singled next to move Clem into scoring position. Sierra Frazier came through once again to follow, cracking an RBI single to send home Clem once again. Junior infielder Dylinn Stancil drew a walk next to load the bases for sophomore Jenna Olszewski, who pushed a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Hegh to put the Blazers up, 3-0.
UAB didn't stop there, punching in another pair in the top of the fourth. After junior outfielder Natalie Erwin climbed aboard on a fielder's choice, Clem was hit by another pitch and Hegh continued her perfect day with a single to load the bases. Once again, Sierra Frazier came through in the clutch, slicing a two-RBI single through the middle to score Clem and Erwin and stay perfect on the day as well, extending UAB's lead to 5-0.
The Blazers put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth, plating four more runs. With one down, freshman infielder Sadie Frazier got on first by drawing a walk. Erwin soon moved her into scoring position with a single to center field, setting up a two-RBI double by the still perfect Hegh that sent both runners home with two down. Freshman Sierra Frazier continued her perfect day as well to follow, slugging a two-run shot well out of left field to put the Blazers in run-rule territory with a 9-0 advantage.
As Kachel had gone the distance and shut down the 49ers through four innings, Barnes entered in relief in the bottom of the fifth. Barnes finished things off in four batters with a strikeout to seal the game for the Blazers, winning 9-0 by a run rule through five innings.
The Blazers are scheduled to continue play and wrap up the season in a doubleheader on Sunday, resuming play from game two at 9 a.m. CT at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.
