Blazers Drops Game Two of Charlotte Series

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball fell to Charlotte on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers lost 1-7 at Mary Bowers Field, falling to a record of 21-26 and 12-11 in conference play. The Green and Gold tallied four hits and three errors.
IN THE INNINGS
The 49ers were first to strike with a walk and hit to put two runners on base. Following the sequence, Charlotte delivered an RBI double to take the early 2-0 lead. The Blazers followed up with three straight outs to conclude the inning. With the 49ers leading, UAB was unable to respond on offense but kept Charlotte from scoring in the second. A defensive miscue landed a runner on base but the Blazers fielded a double play to conclude the inning.
UAB was unable to score, going three-up-three down, and could not contain Charlotte at bat. The 49ers reached on an error to open up the inning before a 2RBI homer put Charlotte ahead 4-0. The Green and Gold then made a pitching change, subbing Caitlin Russell out and putting in Olivia Cummings. Charlotte tallied up three more hits, adding another run to the board to close out the inning with a five-run lead in the third.
Entering the bottom of the third, UAB gained a walk from Carlie Wilkins, followed by a groundout to advance Wilkins. With Bella Wiggins at bat, she sent an RBI single to center field to plate Wilkins and put the Blazers on the board. With UAB trailing by four runs, they continued the momentum into the top of the fourth, Cummings then went back-to-back in strikeouts before Lindsey Smith collected a lineout to finish out the fourth.
The Blazers were able to collect a hit in the bottom of the fourth before Charlotte responded with two more hits and two more runs in the fifth. With UAB trailing by six runs, the Blazers looked to respond with a two-out single and walk, however, they were unable to capitalize. Charlotte collected another hit in the sixth, while UAB went hitless. The Blazers were able to strand a runner in the seventh.
With one-half inning left, the Blazers got two early outs before Hannah Dorsett singled to third base on a bunt. With Wiggins returning to bat, the Green and Gold looked to extend the game but were unable to with a flyball to center field.
IN THE BOX
- UAB finished with four hits. Of the four hits, Bella Wiggins had half, collecting the sole RBI for the Blazers.
- Olivia Cummings collected five strikeouts on the day for the Blazers, facing 22 batters and throwing 85 pitches.
- The Blazers left six runners stranded.
