UAB Falls to Charlotte After Seventh Inning Rally

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball dropped the third and final game of the Charlotte series after a seventh-inning rally from the 49ers. The Blazers finished the game with six hits, including a solo homer and double.
The Blazers fall to a record of 21-27 and sit at 12-12 in the AAC.
IN THE INNINGS
The game started with an early 1-2-3 inning for the Blazers on defense, giving UAB a chance to strike first in the bottom of the first. With three balls and a strike, Bella Wiggins delivered a leadoff solo homer to right center, giving the Blazers the 1-0 lead. Olivia Valbak followed with a two-out base hit before Hannah Miles hit a flyball out to right field.
The Blazers continued the defensive efforts, stranding a 49er on base in the second and leaving them hitless. UAB responded with two hits in the bottom, putting runners on first and second but were unable to collect the run.
Charlotte was able to get a hit in, gaining a runner on first after a base hit up the middle in the third. But UAB continued to keep the 49ers at bay. The Blazers were unable to gain any runs but allowed two hits in the fourth before Hannah Dorsett halted the rally with an athletic backhand grab to conclude the top of the fourth.
Charlotte made a pitching change in the bottom of the fourth, walking Lilly Crowe who entered as a pinch hitter. The Blazers went hitless before the fifth inning came forward, after a HBP to put one runner on, Charlotte collected a single to put two on base. The Blazers continued to hold their ground, along with Charlotte doing the same throughout the fifth.
In the sixth, Charlotte went three up and three down before the Green and Gold had an opportunity to extend the lead. After an unassisted groundout to first from Valbak, Hannah Miles was able to reach on a fielding error. Mackenzie Droddy then came to bat after, delivering what would have been an RBI double, however after review, Miles was seen to have left early, wiping the run and leaving the score at 1-0.
In the seventh, Charlotte went for four hits. A 2RBI single to right center put Charlotte up 2-1 before a 2RBI homer extended the lead from one to three for Charlotte. The Blazers halted the rally with a grab into the wall from Auburn Dupree. With just three outs left, the Blazers opened with a leadoff double from Alyssa Aguilar. A flyball out and sac bunt put Arden Plugge (pinch runner) at third before a flyball to left field concluded the inning and game.
IN THE BOX
- UAB finished with six hits and tallied one error.
- Bella Wiggins added home run number three on the season with her solo shot. She finished the game with the sole RBI.
- Alyssa Aguilar led the team in hits with two.
UP NEXT
UAB travels to Greenville, North Carolina for the final AAC series of the regular season. The Blazers take on ECU on May 3-5.
