UAB Softball Completes Series Sweep with 9-1 Win Over UTSA

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team completed the series sweep over UTSA on Sunday afternoon with a 9-1 six-inning victory at Mary Bowers Field.
The Blazers are now 12-11 and 3-0 in league action after playing their first-ever American Athletic Conference series.
With the game tied at 1-1, UAB scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to bust the contest wide open. The Blazers scored 20 runs in the three-game series and held UTSA to just five.
The Roadrunners scored an unearned run in the first inning on a pair of fielding errors by the Blazers.
The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when UAB loaded the bases with one out and evened the game on a sacrifice fly by designated player Kaily Collett which scored Hannah Dorsett.
The Blazers opened the fifth with back-to-back bunt singles from Hannah Miles and Lauren Brock, followed by a walk from Balla Wiggins which loaded the bases with no outs.
Dorsett was then hit by a pitch to give UAB a 2-1 lead, followed by a fielding error which scored another run. Olivia Valbak then roped a double down the left field line to score two more, making the score 5-1. Allyson Smith provided the final two runs of the inning with a single to left.
In the sixth, pinch hitter Carlie Wilkins delivered her first hit of the season in walk-off fashion as her double to right scored Dorsett and Smith to end the game.
Caitlin Russell pitched all six innings for the Blazers and allowed just three hits while striking out three. She is now 4-2 on the season with a 2.23 ERA.
Up next, UAB ventures to Florida for a midweek game at Florida Gulf Coast, followed by a weekend series at Florida Atlantic.
