LAKE CHARLES- UAB softball split its two games at Joe Miller Field on the second day of the Evangeline Bank and Trust Invitational. The Blazers defeated Tulsa 5-1, and fell to McNeese State 4-3 in nine innings.
GAME 1: UAB 5, Tulsa 1
The first contest was a competitive game that saw UAB find their groove hitting the ball. The game started slowly, with both teams taking a while to reach home plate, before UAB began to heat up offensively.
After four scoreless innings, which featured stingy defense and excellent pitching from Sarah Cespedes, (four strikeouts in game 1) the Blazer bats started to pop off in the bottom of the 5th inning. Lindsey Smith scored thanks to an RBI by Makenzie Droddy and after that, UAB (1-3) scored three more times to stretch the lead to 4-0. The Golden Hurricanes (0-2) scored at the top of the 6th to cut the UAB lead to 4-1, and the Blazers stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the 6thwith a chance to seal the game. The Blazers did just that, with Lindsey Smith scoring via an RBI from Olivia Valbak to push the advantage to 5-1. Tulsa had one more chance to put runs on the board, but the Blazer defense held tight and ended the game on a strikeout by Sarah Cespedes.
GAME 2: UAB 3, McNeese State 4
UAB's second game of the day was a hard fought, back and forth matchup that required nine innings to finish.
The first two innings were scoreless, despite a triple from Lindsey Smith that likely would have been a home run if not for the windy conditions that slowed the ball as it descended toward the left wall.
A Sierra Frazier triple became an RBI when Faith Hegh scored, and Lindsey Smith scored thanks to a single from Olivia Valbak, and the Blazers took a 2-0 lead. McNeese State (3-0) later scored in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 2-1. After an unsuccessful turn at bat for the Blazers, McNeese State scored again to tie the game at 2 apiece heading into the 5th.
Lauren Brock scored at the top of the 6th inning via a Sierra Frazier RBI, which gave the Blazers a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the 6th, McNeese State was able to tie the game once again due to a throwing error by UAB. The game remained tied throughout the 7th and 8th innings, with each team making clutch defensive stands, which brought the game into a 9thinning. UAB was unable to get home in the top of the 9th, and with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th, McNeese State scored the game winning run on a tightly contested RBI.
"I am very proud of our team's fight today." Said Coach Joe Guthrie. "That's what we asked most of all. They did that. I have to get them better prepared for momentum items that determine victory or defeat. We will continue on that path. Tomorrow is championship Sunday."
UAB will take on Tulsa tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT. in Lafayette, Louisiana.
