LAST TIME OUT:
The Blazers opened the 2021 season by going 2-2 at the Trojan Classic hosted by Troy last weekend. UAB dropped its first two contests to Ole Miss and Troy, but rebounded nicely to defeat the Rebels 13-5 in five innings and concluded the tournament with a 5-0 victory over Belmont.
The 13 runs scored against Ole Miss were the most by the Blazers since May 5, 2019, when UAB defeated Charlotte 16-2.
Sophomore catcher Sierra Frazier led the charge by batting .500 with five hits, three runs scored, two RBI and a home run. She was one of four Blazers who hit .400 or better on the weekend, along with Sam Bean (.444), Jolie Readeaux (.400) and Analyse Petree (.400). Petree recorded her 30th career double, and in the process moved into sole possession of eighth place for most doubles in school history.
In the circle, Jaycee Cook went 4.0 innings and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts against Belmont, earning her first victory of the season. She, Emily Kachel and Amy Woodham pitched 20.2 of the team's 23.2 total innings, while Kachel picked up the win against Ole Miss.
SCOUTING THE FIELD:
LOUISIANA:
Louisiana enters the weekend ranked No. 9 nationally but has not yet played this season. The Ragin' Cajuns finished last year at 18-6 overall and defeated the Blazers 7-4 in Birmingham.
SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA:
The Lions are 3-2 overall by going 3-1 against South Dakota, and suffering a loss to North Texas. In their three wins against South Dakota, the Lions scored a total of 42 runs, including a season-high 17 in a wild 17-15 victory. Heather Zumo is the reigning Southland Pitcher of the Week after a 2-0 weekend in which she had a 3.50 ERA and held opponents to a .156 batting average.
JACKSONVILLE STATE:
Jacksonville State is 0-1 after a 7-6 loss to ULM last weekend. The remainder of their tournament was canceled as the Gamecocks were supposed to see action against Arkansas, Louisiana Tech and Lipscomb.
