2/20/2021 10:37:00 PM | Softball
The Blazers scored a season high 14 runs against the Lions, then received a fantastic pitching performance from Amy Woodham in game two, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Ragin' Cajuns.
GAME ONE: UAB 14, SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA 6 (Six Innings)
The Blazers came out of the gates on fire by plating five runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. Analyse Petree had a two RBI double and Sam Bean an RBI double to build a 5-1 lead.
The Lions got two runs back in the top of the second, but Petree then launched her first home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning to give UAB a 7-3 advantage. Her two-run shot gave her four runs batted in her first two plate appearances.
Southeastern Louisiana then scored three runs on four hits to claw back into the game at 7-6 in the top of the third, but UAB once again responded with two runs in the bottom half to keep the lead at a comfortable distance.
UAB scored one run in the fifth on an RBI double by Jenna Olszewski, and then ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with four additional runs. KK Crocker's RBI groundout ended the contest at 14-6.
Freshman Sophie Golliver earned her first career win in the circle by throwing 3.1 innings of relief work and allowing just one hit.
UAB's 14 runs and 13 hits were both season highs.
GAME TWO: #9 LOUISIANA 1, UAB 0
It was a pitchers duel between UAB's Amy Woodham and Louisiana's Summer Ellyson, but it was the Ragin' Cajuns who came away with the 1-0 victory.
Woodham was lights out, pitching a complete game and allowing two hits while striking out six Louisiana batters. However, Ellyson also tossed a complete game and allowed just three hits while striking out seven Blazers.
The game's only run came in the third inning as freshman Taylor Roman singled to open the inning and then stole second to get into scoring position. Four batters later, Bryan singled up the middle to plate Roman.
UAB's best chance to equalize came in the bottom of the sixth as Jenna Olszewski reached second on a UL error to open the inning, then was moved third on a fly out. However, the Blazers struck out and flied out to end the inning.
UAB will once again face Southeastern Louisiana and #9 Louisiana on Sunday to concluded the Green and Gold Classic. Action at Mary Bowers Field begins at 10 a.m. with the Lions and Cajuns squaring off, followed by UAB playing at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
