BIRMINGHAM - UAB's women's soccer team will commence the 2019 season when they make the quick trek across town to Samford on Thursday evening. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Samford Soccer Complex. Admission to the match is free.
THE SERIES
Thursday's match will be the seventh time the Blazers and Bulldogs meet. The two Birmingham schools resumed the local rivalry last season after a six year hiatus with UAB winning 2-0. UAB also picked up wins in 2011 and 2008. The series is tied 3-3-0.
ABOUT UAB
The Blazers are coming off a 9-8-1 season and a third place finish in Conference USA with a 6-4-0 record. The 2019 squad has nine freshmen and three transfers to go along with the 16 returners. UAB brings back over 55 percent of its goal scoring output from last year led by junior forward Kamilah Mustafa who found the back of the net eight times – five of those for game winners. Mustafa is one of six Blazers, joining Betsy Ornelas, Regan Kommor, Natalie Presedo, Melissa Cameron and Sarah Buse that started at least half of the 2018 matches. Audria Wood, a 2017 Conference USA All-Rookie selection, will be back in action after missing 15 matches last season with an injury. Head coach Erica Demers is in her third season and has a 22-12-4 record.
ABOUT SAMFORD
The Bulldogs are coming off a 12-6-1 season and a SoCon regular season title. They return six starters and 14 players from last year's team including First Team All-Conference selections Allie Lourie and Caroline Orman. Also returning are Second Team All-Conference players Taylor Meneide and Taylore Miller. Samford is coached by Todd Yelton who enters his 18th season with the Bulldogs.
