UAB Opens 2019 Season with a Scoreless Tie at Samford

BIRMINGHAM – Stella Kiss' shot with 36 seconds remaining in the second overtime period hit the cross bar and was the final scoring chance for UAB as they played cross-town rival Samford to a 0-0 tie on Thursday night.
Johanna Popp faced 24 shots and made 10 saves in her collegiate debut.
UAB had their first scoring chance in the 13th minute when Tori Gann found Megan Hudgens just outside the box for a header, but her shot was punched away by Samford keeper Morgan McAslan. The Blazers would have two more chances in the half, but McAslan turned both Sarah Buse and Lizzie Hill away.
The Blazers had a solid second half, firing six shots with three on target. Asha Zuniga's shot with 13 minutes left was inches high and Shy'Nya Stephen deked out a Samford defender on the right side with 4:55 to play but her shot was stopped by McAslan.
However, it was Popp that kept UAB in the contest, turning away four difficult shots in the second half and making a diving stop with 3:15 to play in the first overtime.
"Johanna saved us tonight," said head coach Erica Demers. "Coming into the season, she had big shoes to fill and tonight she proved 100 percent that she can fill those shoes. I am very proud of her performance."
"I thought the first half for us was kind of slow and I don't think we played UAB soccer. When I talked to the team at halftime, I wanted them to calm down and breathe. In the second half, we got our organization together and had some UAB soccer moments. Overall, I'm really happy with our performance in the first game," added Demers.
UAB (0-0-1) opens newly renovated BBVA Field on Sunday at 1 p.m. against TCU (0-1-0). The Horned Frogs fell to No. 1 Florida State 2-0 on Thursday night.
