Blazers Drop 2-1 in American Championship to UTSA

BIRMINGHAM – UTSA (9-5-5, 4-3-3) scored a goal in each half and held off UAB women's soccer (7-6-6, 4-3-3) for a 2-1 win Monday in the American Conference Championship in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
Michelle Polo opened the scoring in the 31st minute off assists from Bri Carrigan and Ava Jackon to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead at halftime. Aaliyaiah Durden added to the advantage in the 57th minute, finishing a pass from Leah Varela to make it 2-0.
UAB cut the deficit in the 79th minute when Lailah Stewart scored her eighth goal of the season with an assist from Avery Berryman, but the Blazers could not find an equalizer.
UTSA outshot UAB 16-12 and held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Jasmine Kessler made four saves for the Roadrunners, while Leah Parsons recorded seven for the Blazers.
