BIRMINGHAM – Following its lone bye of the season, the UAB softball team will be back in action to host Conference USA West division foe North Texas for the final home series of the regular season on April 27 and April 28 at Mary Bowers Field. The Blazers and Mean Green are scheduled to play in a doubleheader with games at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, then wrap up the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Live streaming will be available through the Conference USA, and live stats will be provided through SIDEARM.
UAB (15-27, 5-12 C-USA) comes into the series with the most rest between games this season having last played on April 16 against Mississippi State. In that game, the Blazers trailed 5-0 in the top of the second, but stormed back to draw within one before falling in the end, 5-4. Junior outfielder Destini England led the Blazer bats through the game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, also adding a stellar diving grab in the bottom of the sixth to prevent Mississippi State from building on its lead. From the circle, freshman Sarah Cespedes took the brunt of the load and shut down the potent Bulldog attack, going five innings while allowing no runs on six hits with a strikeout.
UAB has held some of the best batting numbers in the conference throughout the season. After leading the conference in batting average and doubles per game a few weeks straight, the Blazers are third in the conference and currently ranked No. 68 in the nation in batting average at .291. Junior infielder Dylinn Stancil has been marked one of the most difficult players to strike out in the nation this season with six strikeouts in 128 at-bats, ranking second in the conference and No. 47 in the country.
North Texas (29-16, 14-4 C-USA) travels to Mary Bowers Field after sweeping division opponent UTSA over the weekend and falling to No. 13 Oklahoma State in a midweek contest, 6-0. The Mean Green are currently tied for the division lead at 14-4 in conference play, winning five out of six conference series this season with the lone series loss coming at the hands of current Conference USA leader, Western Kentucky (33-9, 15-3 C-USA).
