Blazers Host Inaugural Teal Game Against Mississippi State
4/15/2019 8:24:00 PM | Softball
BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team will play in its third SEC midweek matchup in as many weeks on Tuesday as it hosts Mississippi State for its inaugural teal game at 5 p.m. at Mary Bowers Field. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available through SIDEARM.
The teal game represents awareness for ovarian cancer. Former Mississippi State outfielder Alex Wilcox's battle with the disease and efforts from the Geaux Teal Foundation have sparked a movement across the nation in the softball community to continue to fight and raise awareness. Teal wristbands will be given out before the game, and videos about the cause will be played throughout the game. UAB's players will also sport teal uniforms in honor of Wilcox and to spread awareness. More information on the topic can be found at www.geauxteal.com.
UAB (15-26, 5-12 C-USA) comes into the contest on a tough stretch. After leading No. 15 Ole Miss the majority of the game before falling in extras, 3-2, the Blazers were unable to pick up a win in their last conference series against Southern Miss.
UAB has held some of the best batting numbers in the conference throughout the season. After leading the conference in batting average and doubles per game a few weeks straight, the Blazers are third in the conference and currently rank No. 65 in the nation in batting average at .293. UAB continues to lead the conference in doubles per game and comes in at No. 30 in the country with a 1.59 average as well.
Individually, freshman Faith Hegh comes in at second in the conference in the category, averaging 0.31 doubles per game to rank 88th nationally. Sophomore outfielder Jenna Olszewski has also maintained a high-ranking mark this season, coming in at third in the conference and 28th in the NCAA in triples on the season with four to date.
Mississippi State (25-17, 3-12 SEC) will make the trip after mercy ruling Memphis in five innings, 15-3, in a midweek contest and being swept at No. 8 Tennessee over the weekend. Despite their recent struggles in conference, the Bulldogs have wins over No. 5 LSU, No. 7 Alabama and No. 12 Auburn under their belt. Showcasing the difficulty of an SEC slate, Mississippi is currently 22-5 outside of conference play.
As a unit, the Bulldogs boast one of the most powerful batting orders as they rank No. 13 in the country and third in the SEC with 1.36 home runs per game. Sophomore infielder Mia Davidson leads the charge for Mississippi State as she currently sits atop the SEC and the NCAA with 21 home runs on the season to go with a .433 batting average that puts her in the top 25 nationally. Along with that, Davidson is second in the conference and the nation in slugging percentage with a 1.017 average to date. Notably, the Hillsborough, N.C., native also leads the SEC and is ranked third in the country in total bases with 122 this season. Lastly, Davidson currently comes in at second in the conference and ninth in the nation in RBI with 52 on the season.
In the circle, sophomore Emily Williams has put forth the most successful body of work for the Bulldogs to date. Williams currently has a 2.73 ERA after making 25 appearances with 14 starts, pitching five complete games with three shutouts and three saves, also compiling 104 strikeouts in 100 innings to go 8-6 this season.
In the all-time series between the two, Mississippi State currently holds a 15-6 lead. The Bulldogs took the first matchup, 4-1, during UAB's inaugural 2000 season and the last meeting, 8-0, during the 2017 season. The most successful stretch in the series for the Blazers was a three-game winning streak from the 2014 through 2016 seasons, when the Blazers picked up two wins on the road and one at home.
UAB will have its longest break of the season following the game as the Blazers have a bye over the weekend and do not have a midweek game scheduled the following week. UAB's next competition will be its final home series, a conference series against North Texas on April 27 and April 28 at Mary Bowers Field. The Blazers and the Mean Green will play in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, then wrap up the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 28.
