Women’s Tennis Splits a Pair of Weekend Matches in Tennessee

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's tennis team split a pair of matches this weekend by defeating Tennessee State 6-1 and falling narrowly at Lipscomb 4-3.
The Blazers (1-2) began the weekend with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss at Lipscomb on Saturday night in Nashville.
UAB won the doubles point with victories on courts one and three to take a 1-0 advantage into singles. The tandem of Marlene Herrmann and Alexandra Shcipankia defeated Kate Popova and Vika Dzyuba 6-4, and court three's duo of Sophie Dodds and Hana Sisirak secured the double point with another 6-4 victory for the Blazers.
Lipscomb however, rallied in singles by winning on courts 1-4 to earn the team win. UAB's Jana Hecking was victorious on court five after she took the first set 6-3 before her opponent retired in the second set. Dominika Hrabalova notched UAB's other singles victory. After falling 6-4 in the first set, Hrabalova took the second set 6-3, then won the tie-break in dramatic fashion, 11-9.
The Blazers then earned their first victory of the spring on Sunday by defeating Tennessee State 6-1.
UAB won on all doubles courts for the 1-0 advantage, then took five of six singles matches. Three of the six matches were decided in straight sets for the Blazers, while UAB also won on courts two and five in tie-break victories.
UAB will remain on the road next weekend with matches at Kennesaw State on Friday, Feb. 1, and at (rv) Auburn on Saturday, Feb. 2.
