DENTON, Texas – The UAB softball team beat North Texas 6-0 on Sunday at Lovelace Stadium, claiming the West Division Championship and securing a second seed in the Conference USA Tournament.
The result was never in doubt, as the Blazers used back-to-back doubles from Analyse Petree and Rachel Rogers to take a 1-0 in the first. In the third, UAB tacked on three runs as Rogers picked up her second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly and Claire Blount hit a two-run home run to take a 4-0 lead.
UAB (25-30-1, 15-8-1 C-USA) padded its lead in the fourth when Ashton Clem hit her first career home run deep over the wall in left. Rogers got her third RBI of the day and her 37th of the year when she singled, driving home Natalie Erwin from second to give the Blazers a 6-0 lead.
Claire Blount (9-13) got the start in the circle and threw two innings, allowing two hits and just one walk. Emily Kachel and Megan Smith also tossed two innings for the Blazers, each allowing a single hit while walking one and striking out one. Bailie Barnes threw the final inning for UAB, getting the Mean Green in order.
"Winning our division and claiming the number two overall seed in the conference tournament is a major accomplishment and I am so happy for this team," head coach Amanda Ellis said. "They have fought all year long and have given so much that coming through to win the division is a great reward. We're not done yet, not by a long shot, and we still have unfinished business to take care of in the conference tournament. We connected as a team this season and played for each other. Their heart and never-say-die attitude put them in this position and it has been really fun to watch and be a part of."
North Texas (25-26, 11-12) started Hope Trautwein (15-11) in the circle, pitching three innings and allowing four runs on six hits. Hanna Rebar threw 0.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Ally Lindsey and Maria Priest also saw time in the circle for the Mean Green.
