FIU Sweeps Sunday Double Header
4/8/2018 5:55:00 PM | Baseball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It was all FIU on Sunday at Young Memorial Field as the Panthers swept the double header over the UAB baseball team 4-6 and 3-0, respectively.
FIU improves to 16-17 and 6-6 in Conference USA and UAB falls to 14-16 and 6-6 in league play.
"This was another typical Conference USA weekend as all three games could have gone either way," head coach Brian Shoop said. "FIU scored nine runs on the day and seven of those got on base either by being walked or getting hit by a pitch which makes it tough on the defense. We had 12 hits to their eight, but 11 of ours were singles and that makes it hard to score and if you don't score any you can't win which is what happened in the second game. A hit here or a hit there changes both games but we are in the thick of things at 6-6 and I look forward to playing Alabama and heading to Old Dominion."
Game One
FIU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Derek Cartaya came around to score on a wild pitch after reaching base on a leadoff walk.
The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the third inning as they strung together consecutive two-out RBI to take a 3-0 lead.
UAB answered in the bottom of the fourth as Carter Pharis, Thomas Johns and Stephen Dobbs all drew walks to begin the inning. A no-out wild pitch scored Pharis and advanced Thomas and Johns 90-feet as the Blazers cut the lead to two.
Johns would come around to score after Antonio Ralat grounded into a fielder's choice to cut the game to 3-2.
The Blazers added another run in the sixth inning after Price Visintainer reached on a fielder's choice. The senior swiped his third and fourth bases of the season before Tyler Tolbert hit a sac fly to center to score Visintainer to tie the game at three.
FIU scored three runs on just one hit in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-3 lead.
Colton Schultz led off the seventh with a single through the left side for UAB. He moved into scoring position with a Pharis bunt single and then scored one-batter later as Thomas Johns hit a one-out single through the left side to give the game its final 4-1 score as the Panthers struck out the UAB side to end the game.
Andres Nunez earned the win for the Panthers, his second of the season, while Ty Harris took the loss for the Blazers, also his second of the year.
Game Two
The Panthers took a lead in the fifth inning that it would not relinquish en route to the sweep. FIU led off the frame with a single through the right side before Tyler Gates hit a batter to put runners on with no outs. Carson Jones came in the game in relief of Gates and got the first batter to ground into a fielder's choice. UAB intentionally walked the bases loaded with one out but then proceeded to walk in the next hitter as FIU took a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers hit into their second fielder's choice of the inning, this time scoring a run and taking a 2-0 lead.
Eddie Silva hit a solo run in the sixth inning for the Panthers third and final run.
UAB threatened in the seventh inning as Johns got a leadoff walk and Blake Johnson came in to pinch run. Dobbs singled Johnson to second and Nathan Anthes came in to pinch run for Dobbs. The Panthers retired the side with two fly outs and strikeout to end the threat and take the series 2-1.
Nick MacDonald pitched a complete seven inning game allowing just four hits with four strikeouts and three walks and earned his second win of the season. Gates took the loss for the Blazers, the first of his career.
Brett Blackwood led the UAB charge offensively finishing the day 3-for-6 and a run scored and two hits in the first game. Schultz also added a pair of hits in game one as well.
UAB begins its longest road stint of the season when it returns to the diamond at Alabama on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The Blazers then travel to Norfolk, Va., to take on Old Dominion in a three-game series beginning April 13.
