UAB Suffers 12-3 Loss at Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After going ahead 2-0 in the second inning, the UAB baseball team was unable to hold off the surging Crimson Tide as Alabama beat the Blazers 12-3 on Tuesday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
UAB (14-17) struck first in the second as Brett Blackwood and Carter Pharis strung together consecutive singles to lead off the inning. Stephen Dobbs grounded out to shortstop to advance the runners 90 feet before Zack Davis hit a bases-clearing single to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead.
Alabama (21-13) answered in the bottom half of the second as it got the leadoff runners aboard via a walk and an error. Matt Malkin then homered off the scoreboard to give the Crimson Tide took a 3-2 lead.
Pharis hit a one-out single in the top of the fourth, followed by a Dobbs single to left field. Zack Davis walked to load the bases for the Blazers before Antonio Ralat hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Pharis and knotting the game back at three.
The Crimson Tide then added six runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning highlighted by a two-run by a Cobie Vance two-run home run as Alabama took a 9-3 lead.
Alabama tacked on three more runs on three hits in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 12-3.
"I'm glad that one is over," head coach Brian Shoop said. "Games like that happen once in a while and it's over and we can move on to the next one."
Tyler Adams (2-1) earned the win for the Crimson Tide after pitching a perfect fifth inning. Ryan Ruggles (0-2) took the loss for the Blazers after he lasted three innings, giving up six runs on four hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Pharis finished the night 2-for-4 scoring two of the Blazers' runs, while Johns came in to pinch hit in the sixth inning and went 2-for-2 with a career high two doubles.
UAB continues its road swing this weekend with a trip to Norfolk, Va., to take on Old Dominion. The Blazers begin a three-game series on Friday with first pitch slated for 5 p.m. CT from the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
