Troy Uses Comeback Win to Down Blazers

TROY, Ala. – The UAB baseball team was unable to manufacture more than two runs for the third consecutive game as it fell 3-2 to Troy on Wednesday night at Riddle Pace Field.
"That's three games in a row that we haven't scored more than three runs, that puts unbelievable pressure on a pitching staff," head coach Brian Shoop said. "We have pitched plenty good to win all of those but at some point you have to score more than two runs a game."
UAB (4-3) struck first in the second inning when Zack Davis hit a lead off double to right center field. A Brett Blackwood single moved him to third and a sacrifice fly from Colton Schultz would score him to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
Tyler Tolbert led off the third inning with a single for the Blazers. He picked up his fifth stolen base of the season to move into scoring position before he reached third on an error by the pitcher. Carter Pharis grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to score Tolbert and give UAB its second run of the game.
Troy (5-4) cut into the lead in the third inning when Brandon Lockridge hit a sole homerun off of Matthew Calvert to cut the score to 2-1.
Lockridge's groundout scored Matt Sanders who hit a one-out triple tying the game in the bottom of the seventh. Troy tacked on the winning run later in the inning when Joey Denison scored on a two-out single to give the Trojans a 3-2 lead.
CJ Carter picked up his second win of the season for the Trojans while Cole Cordrey was credited with the loss for the Blazers.
The Blazers used eight pitchers in the combined eight inning outing and tallied 11 strikeouts. Kyle Davis led the way when after he gave up a leadoff double, the junior struck out the next three Trojans to get out of the jam.
Schultz led UAB offensively going 1-for-2 with a sac fly and a walk to extend his team-best on-base streak to 12 games.
UAB returns to action this weekend when it welcomes 2017 Big 10 Champion Iowa to Regions Field. The first of the three game series is set for Friday at 4 p.m.
"Back to work tomorrow," Shoop said. "I think the kids will be excited to be playing a regional team this weekend. The games won't get any easier, the arms we will face are going to be outstanding, but we'll have to keep plugging away and hope that we can tip the scales in our favor to where we can score enough runs to give our pitchers a chance."
