BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team fell 4-1 to Iowa on Friday night at Regions Field.
"I was super encouraged," head coach Brian Shoop said. "That's a team that won 39 games last year and we were right there."
Iowa (7-1) struck first in the third inning when Justin Jenkins scored on a one-out single to give the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead.
UAB (4-4) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning after Tyler Tolbert drove home Luke Eigsti who led off the inning with a single to knot the game at one.
The Blazers retired the first two Hawkeye hitters of the fifth inning before giving up two runs with two-outs giving Iowa a 3-1 lead.
UAB got bases loaded with two outs in the seventh inning before Stephen Dobbs stuck out swinging to end the frame.
The Blazers threatened again in the eighth as Price Visintainer and Zack Davis knocked consecutive singles. The inning came to a halt though when Carter Pharis grounded into a 6-3 double play ending the threat.
"We had a great chance in the seventh inning with bases loaded for Dobbs and a great chance in the eighth with two on and one out for Carter, who you want up," Shoop said.
Ben Newman led off the Hawkeye ninth inning with a triple and he would come home and score the final run of the contest to give Iowa a 4-1 victory.
Iowa starter Nick Allgeyer earned his first win of the season as he threw 6.2 innings allowing just one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Zach Daniels came on in the eighth inning to earn his second save of the season.
Tanner Graham (0-1) was credited with the loss for the Blazers, despite not giving up an earned run over 6.2 innings of work. The junior sat down seven batters and allowed five hits in his second start of the season.
Tyler Gates made his first career appearance tonight in the seventh inning. The redshirt junior did now allow a hit over 1.1 innings of work.
"I saw some positive signs of our offense, I thought Tanner was outstanding and it was just awesome to see Tyler Gates back on the mound because it's been a long long road. If he can get back in the mix for us we're a lot better because he brings not only ability but a toughness that will really help our club well," Shoop said.
Game two of the three game series is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. from Regions Field.
"I told our kids that I'd go home encouraged and can't wait to get back to the park tomorrow," Shoop said.
