BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team defeated Alabama State 2-1 in a pitcher's duel on Wednesday night at Regions Field.
"I think most people would have assumed that with this being the fifth game in six days for both teams it would be a high scoring affair, but it ended up being a pitcher's duel," head coach Brian Shoop said.
Alabama State (3-2) struck first grabbing the lead in the first inning. Yamil Pagan hit a one-out double before reaching third on a passed ball. Hunter Allen singled to right scoring Pagan giving the Hornets a 1-0 lead.
UAB (4-1) tied the game in the second thanks to the bat of Zack Davis who led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, Antonio Ralat singled to left field scoring Davis and knotting the game at one.
The Blazers added the winning run in the sixth inning. Davis singled to center for his second hit of the night. He would come around to score on a double play off the bat of Thomas Johns.
The bullpen for the Blazers shined in the win. Cole Whitman came on in relief in the second and threw four hitless innings with six strikeouts in his UAB debut.
Sylvester Toe (1-0) was credited with the win, the first of his career. The sophomore pitched 2.2 innings in relief of Whitman and allowed just one hit while fanning a career-high four batters. Ty Harris earned the save, the first of his career.
"Cole was fantastic and I thought Sylvester was good too, those two took a huge jump for us," Shoop said. "Both have had plus stuff but just hadn't found the zone. Tonight was exciting because while we know they won't be perfect, if that's what we're going to get out of them then they make us a lot better. Those two were the night for us."
Gage Dollar (0-1) took the loss in his Alabama State debut after lasting five innings. Britt Buckelew came on in relief in the sixth inning and did not allow a Blazer hit.
The Blazers return to action on Friday night as they travel to Arkansas State to begin a three-game series with first pitch slated for 4:00 p.m.
