BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB baseball team fell 4-2 to Jacksonville State on Tuesday night at Regions Field.
Jacksonville State (6-2) grabbed the first lead of the game after Andrew Naismith doubled to left to leadoff the second inning. He came around to score three batters later on an error by the infield to give the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead.
UAB (4-2) took the lead back in the third inning when it scored two runs on just one hit. Stephen Dobbs reached on an error by the second baseman before Tyler Tolbert walked. Dobbs would give the Blazers their first run when Price Visintainer hit into a fielder's choice scoring Dobbs from third. Carter Pharis hit into the second consecutive fielder's choice of the inning scoring Tolbert and giving UAB a 2-1 lead.
Trent Simpson led off the fourth inning for the Gamecocks with a double down the fight field line. Nic Gaddis drove him home with a one out sac fly to left to tie the game at two.
The Gamecocks regained a lead they would not surrender in the fifth. Clayton Daniel singled to center field scoring Cole Frederick who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning giving Jacksonville State a 3-2 lead.
Frederick gave Jacksonville State some insurance when he scored his second run of the game in the ninth after a sac fly from Taylor Hawthorne gave the Gamecocks a 4-2 lead.
Tyler Wilburn (1-0) was credited with the win while Trent Simpson earned his second save of the season.
Ryan Wesson (1-1) took the first loss of his career for the Blazers. The junior lasted four innings and gave up five hits with three runs, two of which were earned.
UAB tallied a season-low four hits in tonight's loss. Colton Schultz increased his team-best reached base streak to 11 after being hit by a pitch in the sixth inning.
