BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's soccer team takes to the pitch for the first time in 2017 when the Blazers make the short trip east to Jacksonville, Ala., to face Jacksonville State Friday at 7 p.m. in an exhibition contest from JSU Soccer Field.
Guided by first-year head coach Erica Demers, UAB returns nine starters and all four of its top goal scorers from a season ago. Additionally, the Blazers feature a solid defensive unit that surrendered 13 fewer goals from the previous season.
Sophomore Megan Hudgens paced UAB in 2016 with a team-high four goals to go along with three assists for a team-best 11 points. Senior Rachel Green led the Blazers and ranked eighth in Conference USA with six assists, including the game-winning helper in a double overtime victory over UTEP.
Junior Jessica Do ranked third on the squad with nine points on four goals and one assist, while Caroline Kehrer ended the year with seven points on three goals and one assist.
Keeper Kelsey Daugherty is back for her third season in net and is coming off a sophomore campaign that saw her finish fourth in the league with 86 saves. The Kennesaw, Ga., native also stood fourth in Conference USA in saves per game (5.06) and was tied for eighth with three shutouts.
"I love the direction our team has been heading in during the first two weeks of preseason," Demers said. "We asked them to come focused every day and be prepared to give their best. I have been more than happy with their openness to change and their ability to take ideas from one session to the next."
Jacksonville State posted a 5-13-1 overall record last season and was picked to finish ninth in the Ohio Valley Conference in 2017 in a recent vote by the league's coaches. Fifth-year head coach Neil Macdonald features a young team led by sophomore Cheyenne Carden, who earned a spot on the OVC All-Newcomer Team last season as a freshman.
"We are excited about facing a new opponent and seeing what areas we need to spend more time on when we return to the practice field," Demers added. "This game will be useful in giving us a clear idea of what we need to focus on prior to the start of our non-conference schedule."
UAB is 4-0-0 all-time during regular season play against Jacksonville State and has outscored the Gamecocks 19-2 over that stretch.
The Blazers open the regular season Friday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. when UAB welcomes Georgia State to BBVA Compass Field.
