JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Megan Hudgens scored midway through the second period and UAB held off Jacksonville State en route to a 1-0 victory Friday evening in an exhibition match from JSU Soccer Field.
UAB head coach Erica Demers and Jacksonville State head coach Neil Macdonald elected to play three 30-minute periods rather than the traditional two 45-minute halves.
Following a scoreless first period that saw UAB outshoot Jacksonville State 4-1, Hudgens struck for the game-winning goal midway through the second half when she beat Gamecock keeper Caroline Robinson with a shot into the top corner of the net.
Hudgens received the ball at the top of the 18 on the left side of the field, dribbled her way across the field, cut back inside and chipped the ball over Robinson for the goal. A native of Alpharetta, Ga., Hudgens led UAB with four goals in 2016.
The UAB defense held Jacksonville State to just one shot on goal and keepers Kelsey Daugherty and Johanna Popp combined for the shutout.
"Tonight provided us a great opportunity to evaluate our players and the concepts we have begun to incorporate with our team," Demers said. "I'm happy with tonight's performance, but even more so in learning the areas that we need to improve on for when we start non-conference play next week."
UAB makes its regular season debut Friday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. when the Blazers welcome Georgia State to BBVA Compass Field.
