BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB women's soccer team ushers in the 2017 season Friday at 7 p.m. when the Blazers host Georgia State from BBVA Compass Field. UAB puts the finishing touches on its opening weekend Sunday at 1 p.m. with a visit to Jackson, Miss., to take on Jackson State.
The first 100 fans in attendance on Friday will receive a free treat courtesy of Steel City Pops. In addition, all youth wearing their Youth Soccer League Jersey will receive $1 admission in conjunction with Youth Soccer Friday's. Families of four (two adults, two children) can also take advantage of a Family Four ticket package for $10.
UAB turned in a 1-0 victory at Jacksonville State in its only exhibition game of the preseason earlier this month. Sophomore Megan Hudgens scored the only goal midway through the match to lift the Blazers to victory. Hudgens begins this season coming off a freshman campaign that saw her lead UAB with four goals and 11 points.
The Blazers also return offensive catalysts Rachel Green, Jessica Do and Caroline Kehrer, who join Hudgens as UAB's top four goal scorers from a year ago. Green also paced the Blazers with six assists and ranked eighth in Conference USA. Do ranked third on the squad with nine points on four goals and one assist, while Kehrer ended the year with seven points on three goals and one assist.
Keeper Kelsey Daugherty is back for her third season in net and is coming off a sophomore campaign that saw her finish fourth in the league with 86 saves. The Kennesaw, Ga., native also stood fourth in Conference USA in saves per game (5.06) and was tied for eighth with three shutouts.
Georgia State was picked to finish ninth in the Sun Belt in a preseason vote by the league's coaches. The Panthers posted a 5-6-6 overall record last season but return key starters Brooke Shank and Brie Haynes from last year's squad, as well as five other starting players. Shank led the team in scoring with four goals in 2016, while Haynes posted nine shutouts last season, tying for first in the Sun Belt and ranking fourth in the country. In preseason exhibition games earlier this month, Georgia State lost 3-1 at Charlotte before defeating Presbyterian 3-1.
"We are thrilled as a staff and program to play our first game at home and in front of our fans," UAB head coach Erica Demers said. "Being at home always gives an added element of excitement. Our players have been working hard and are excited to play against Georgia State and showcase all the the hard work they have put in the last two weeks."
UAB and Georgia State will meet on the pitch for only the second time when the two schools battle on Friday from BBVA Compass Field. The Blazers turned in a 2-0 victory during the 2007 season in the only other game between the two.
The Blazers have enjoyed an 8-2-0 overall record against schools currently in the Sun Belt Conference. Outside of previous games against Georgia State, UAB has also taken on Coastal Carolina (1-1-0), Georgia Southern (1-0-0), UALR (1-0-0), South Alabama (3-0-0) and Troy (1-1-0) from the Sun Belt Conference. The Blazers have faced at least one school from the Sun Belt Conference in every season since 2013.
Jackson State posted a 4-12-1 overall record and a 4-5-1 mark in conference play en route to finishing sixth in the SWAC last season. The Blazers downed Jackson State 9-0 in 2002 in the only other meeting between the two schools.
The Tigers travel to Southeastern Louisiana on Friday before returning home to host UAB on Sunday.
"I am looking forward to having our team on the road to see how we can be adaptable being away from Birmingham," Demers said. "It will be nice for a change of scenery for our players."
