UAB Starts 1-0 in Conference Play

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball team (10-11) defeated South Florida (16-7) by a score of 7-6 on Friday night to open conference play. The Blazers had to come back from four runs down in the seventh inning to secure the win.

IN THE INNINGS
UAB scored a first inning run on an RBI groundout by Hope Tucker. South Florida controlled the game after UAB's first inning run.

South Florida added two runs in the second and one run in the third. The Bulls hit two solo home runs to help score those three in the second and third. No runs and two hits came in the fourth inning, one by each team.

USF opened up their biggest lead of the game in the fifth inning, when Alex Wilkes scored two runs on a single to center field.

The comeback began in the sixth inning with two runs on a Hannah Miles single. South Florida then added an insurance run in the sixth inning to lead 6-3. Jenna Madison started the seventh inning rally with a pinch hit double. She came around to score when Bella Wiggins hit a single to shallow right field. Hannah Dorsett got on base with an infield single before Hope Tucker singled to the shortstop and scored another run. At this point there was one out and the score was now UAB 5, USF 6. Another run came across before the winning run crossed the plate on an error by South Florida that allowed Dorsett to score.

UAB out hit South Florida 10-8 while USF had the lone four errors in the game. Olivia Cummings got her first win of the season and moves to 1-3 on the year.
