BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball fell to the Charlotte 49ers in a shutout loss on Friday evening. The Blazers closed out the game with a score of 0-5, putting UAB at a record of 21-25 and 12-10 overall.
The Blazers finished with three hits, with Makenzie Droddy leading the way with two on the evening.
IN THE INNINGS
The Blazers and 49ers had a quiet first few innings, with Charlotte being the first to strike with a two-out single to left field to begin the inning. The Blazers were able to keep the 49ers from scoring with a runner leaving early and sending UAB to bat. The Green and Gold turned up fruitless with a 1-2-3 inning to start the first.
Leigha Kirby shined in the second, striking out two batters after an HBP opened up the inning. The Blazers left one stranded but were unable to make an offensive move after another three-up-three-down in the second. Both teams went back-and-forth, gathering a hit apiece in the third and going hitless in the fourth.
It was the fifth that opened up the offense for Charlotte. After an early strikeout, the 49ers homered inside the park to kickstart the early one-run lead. Charlotte added five more hits, gathering back-to-back-to-back hits to extend the lead to 4-0 before a popup to Hannah Dorsett ended the momentum. UAB tried to respond at the bottom of the fifth but was unable. But Charlotte responded with two more hits and another run off a sac fly to collect the fifth and final run.
In the bottom of the sixth, Mackenzie Droddy delivered a leadoff double and was able to advance off a groundout to second base from Auburn Dupree. With Dorsett at bat, the Green and Gold were unable to capitalize after a flyball out to right field. With the final inning, the 49ers went down without a hit before UAB had one final chance to score.
Bella Wiggins entered the inning with a double and went for the triple before getting put out at third base by the right fielder. The Blazers went down after a groundout and strikeout, dropping the first game by five runs.
