Softball Opens AAC Play at Home Against UTSA

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball teams opens American Athletic Conference play this weekend at Mary Bowers Field against UTSA.
The Blazers (9-11) are Roadrunners (7-15) will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., followed by the series finale on Sunday at 12 p.m. This is the AAC opening series for both schools.
UAB is coming off a 3-2 weekend at the Ole Miss Classic, highlighted by a victory over the host Rebels. Freshman Hannah Dorsett was named to the AAC Honor Roll for her efforts in Oxford in which she batted .500 (6-for-12) with five RBI and five runs scored.
Dorsett also delivered a walk-off RBI single in a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Kent State and she is now batting .327 on the season. Dorsett is third on the team in batting average behind Bella Wiggins (.370) and Lindsey Smith (.333) who have been leading the UAB offense the entire season.
Wiggins continues to lead the entire nation in triples (6), while pacing the Blazers in hits (20), runs (13), slugging (.704), walks (12), total bases (38) and on base percentage (.507).
Smith continues to provide the power in the 3-hole for UAB, leading the team in doubles (5), home runs (3) and RBI (17).
In the circle, Leigha Kirby (3-5, 3.09 ERA) has pitched a team-high 45.1 innings as she leads a rotation which includes Caitlin Russell (3-2, 3.21 ERA) who has thrown 32.2 innings and Olivia Valbak (2-3, 2.78 ERA) who has tossed 27.2 innings. Valbak has also started all 20 games and is the team's starting shortstop who is hitting .294.
UTSA started the season 0-8 but has since gone 7-7 over its last 14 games. Jaylen Prichard leads the team with a .294 batting average, while Zelinda Camacho is 2-0 in the circle and has a team-low 4.02 ERA.
