TUSCALOOSA – UAB Softball went the distance Wednesday night against the No. 13/15 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. The Blazers, who started with an early lead, fell to the Tide 3-4 in the final innings under the lights at Rhoads Stadium.
The Green and Gold tallied five hits and posted no errors, with the most runs coming in the second inning. Alabama responded with runs of their own, outhitting UAB in the stretch. The Blazers now sit at a record of 12-16 overall.
IN THE INNINGS
The Green and Gold started with an early three-and-out to begin the game but finished the first inning with defensive highlights to keep Alabama runless. The top of the second saw an immediate burst of offensive prowess from Olivia Valbak, who reached on a single, followed by Alyssa Aguilar reaching base on an error and advancing to send Valbak home. Another run came from Hannah Miles, who hit an RBI single to put Aguilar across home plate to give UAB the 2-0 lead.
The game remained at 2-0 in UAB's favor before a series of runs in the bottom of the third put Alabama up 3-2 after four hits. The Blazers responded with a fifth-inning leadoff single from Miles, followed by Auburn Dupree sending a hit up the middle to give Miles a scoring run. The Green and Gold allowed one hit in the bottom of the fifth, but the score remained knotted at three.
Inching closer to the final innings, the Blazers tested their might in the top of the sixth but were fruitless in collecting a run. The Crimson Tide delivered two hits off a single and advanced on a wild pitch to get into scoring position. With an RBI single to put Alabama in front again, the Blazers halted the momentum with a clutch tag at home from Makenzie Droddy to keep the margin within one. The Blazers tried once more in the top of the seventh to tie but were unable to do so, falling to the Tide 3-4.
