UAB Softball Drops a Pair of Games on Opening Day

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The UAB softball team opened the 2024 season by dropping a pair of games on opening day to IUPUI and Mississippi State at Nusz Park in Starkville.
The Blazers (0-2) sustained a 2-1 loss to IUPUI in their first game of the day, then suffered an 11-0 setback to Mississippi State in game two.
GAME ONE: IUPUI 2, UAB 1
A go-ahead solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning by IUPUI's Kinsey Pfeiffer proved to be the game-winning run as the Jaguars defeated the Blazers 2-1.
IUPUI scored in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Racheal Gregory and the score would remain 1-0 until the top of the sixth when UAB tied it at 1-1.
Bella Wiggins opened the inning with a leadoff triple and two batters later Makenzie Droddy drove her in with a sac fly to the warning track in left field.
However, Pfeiffer gave the Jaguars the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning. UAB had a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh but was unable to get Hannah Dorsett in from second.
Six different Blazers had hits, led by Wiggins who was 1-for-1 with a triple, two walks and a run scored. Caitlin Russell threw all six innings for UAB, allowing seven hits, two walks and three strikeouts.
GAME TWO: MISSISSIPPI STATE 11, UAB 0 (Five Innings)
The Bulldogs plated one run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single, then broke the game open in the second with seven runs. Madisyn Kennedy and Kylee Edwards got the Bulldogs off to strong start in the second with back-to-back home runs.
Mississippi State would add two runs in the third and one in the fourth for the run rule victory.
Due to rain on Sunday, UAB will conclude the Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament on Saturday with rematches against IUPUI at 9:30 a.m. and Mississippi State at 2:30 p.m.
