Softball to Open 2024 Campaign at Mississippi State

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team is set to open the 2024 season this weekend, Feb. 9-11, at the Alex Wilcox Memorial Tournament hosted by Mississippi State University.
With rain in the forecast all weekend, the original schedule has been altered and UAB will now play two games on Friday. Mississippi State will continue to monitor the weather forecast throughout the day on Friday to make a determination of any additional needed schedule changes on Saturday.

Friday, Feb. 9:
2 p.m. – UAB vs. IUPUI
4:30 p.m. – UAB vs. Mississippi State
Head Coach A.J. Daugherty enters his second season leading the Blazers and was named the 2023 Conference USA Coach of the Year in his first season at UAB. Daugherty guided UAB to an overall record to 29-25 last season and a mark of 16-8 in league play.
UAB is led by three returning All-Conference players in shortstop/pitcher Olivia Valbak, outfielder Bella Wiggins and pitcher Leigha Kirby. Additionally, both Hannah Miles and Caitlin Russell return for their sophomore seasons after earning C-USA All-Freshman Team honors in 2023.

Honoring the legendary spirit of the late Alex Wilcox, Mississippi State will continue its "No One Fights Alone" campaign throughout the 2024 softball season.
Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2015, Wilcox defied the odds and continued to play softball throughout her treatments and helped lead Brantley (Ala.) High School to a pair of state championships. Wilcox, a Top 50 recruit in the class of 2017, committed to the Bulldogs during her junior season in high school.
During her freshman campaign, Wilcox continued to battle cancer while continuing to pursue her dreams of playing collegiate softball. She sparkled during the fall, displaying her ability at the plate with home run power. Despite being in the midst of chemotherapy treatments, Wilcox appeared in eight contests with three starts over her freshman season.
The Bulldogs will continue to wear teal uniforms throughout the season to raise awareness for ovarian cancer in honor of the former softball student-athlete who passed away in 2018 at the age of 18 after a courageous fight with the disease.
