Softball Returns to Action at South Alabama Invitational

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team returns to action this weekend, Feb. 16-18, at the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile. The Blazers are set to play five games beginning on Friday.
UAB opens the tournament against Northern Illinois, then will play the Huskies again on Saturday along with Central Michigan. On Sunday, the Blazers conclude the tournament against Eastern Kentucky and South Alabama.
UAB opened the 2024 season by going 1-3 at the Mississippi State. While in Starkville, the Blazers spilt with IUPUI and dropped two contests to the Bulldogs.
Third baseman Lindsey Smith and center fielder Bella Wiggins led the Blazers offensively in the opening week as Smith batted .400 which included a double, a triple, a home run and five RBI. Wiggins hit .375 and added four walks and three runs scored.
Scouting the Field:
South Alabama went 4-1 in Clearwater last weekend which included wins over Notre Dame and St. Johns. Their only loss came to Missouri. EKU also had a stella weekend, going 4-0 at the Terrier Invitational hosted by Wofford.
NIU was 2-3 in the opening weekend and this is the first action of the season for Central Michigan.
