Blazers Secure No. 2 Spot in Game 3 Against Charlotte

CHARLOTTE – UAB Softball completed their regular season run in Charlotte on Sunday afternoon. The Blazers dropped game 52 to the 49ers 3-11 in six innings to bring their record to 29-23 and 16-8 in conference standings.
UAB finished the day with seven hits and no errors. The Blazers finished second in the conference at the conclusion of the regular season in preparation for postseason play in Ruston.

The Blazers entered the game as they did the previous two, with a leadoff single from Lauren Brock to begin the inning. After Brock's single, Bella Wiggins delivered an RBI double to put the Blazers on the board early. The Blazers continued the scoring rally with an RBI single to send Wiggins in with a scoring run. The Blazers led the 49ers 2-0 going into the bottom of the first.
After a walk and a base hit from Charlotte's Krupit, two 49ers occupied second and third. A groundout from Vannoy sent a runner across home plate to close the scoring margin to one run. With a three-up-three-down in the top of the second, two homers and two singles put Charlotte in the lead, 5-2. The Blazers would also go on a hitting sequence with a single from Brock and Valbak, but two Blazers were left stranded.
Entering the bottom of fourth, the 49ers entered the inning with a leadoff single and advanced on a wild pitch after the first out. With Charlotte in scoring position, another runner reached on a base hit to put the 49ers on the corners. A three-run homer followed to put the 49ers up 8-2 at the half-way mark of the competition.
With UAB down six runs entering the fifth, the Blazers had back-to-back outs in the top. Sierra Frazier stepped to bat at her first pitch and sent a solo homer to left field to close the scoring gap to five. In the bottom of the fifth, Charlotte responded with their own solo homer to put the score margin back to six runs. With the score at 9-6, the Blazers made defensive changes, placing Olivia Valbak in the circle for the remainder of the game. Charlotte added another hit and scored after a walk to extend the lead to 10-7.
In the sixth, the Blazers were unable to capitalize and entered the bottom of the sixth with a single to put one runner on base. After a lineout into the glove of Wiggins, the 49ers connected for another hit to advance the runner to third. The walk-off run came from a single to center, giving Charlotte the 11-3 win over the Green and Gold.

The Blazers will travel to Ruston to participate in the 2023 C-USA Softball Tournament. UAB will take on the winner of the UNT and MTSU/La Tech game on Thursday, May 11 at 12 PM (CST).
