Blazers Revisit UNT in C-USA Softball Tournament

RUSTON – UAB Softball gears up for their first game of the 2023 C-USA Softball Championships tomorrow, May 11 at noon against North Texas. The Blazers, the No. 2 seed entering the matchup, take on the No. 3 Mean Green at Billy Bundrick Field.

SCOUTING THE MEAN GREEN
The Blazers and Mean Green meet for the fourth time this season, taking the series the weekend of April 1 to give the Blazers their first series clinch since 2018.
Since the last time the two teams met, the Mean Green went on to take the No. 3 slot, going 32-21. They finished the regular season with a notable Power Fiver Victory over Oklahoma State before falling to MTSU in the final game of the regular season. UNT took on Middle Tennessee again in the C-USA Tournament, defeating the Blue Raiders 2-1 in the first round.
The Mean Green collected their win off two unearned runs, taking advantage of MTSU's defensive miscues to capitalize on the opportunities to score. UNT was outhit by the Blue Raiders three hits to seven, but the pitchers' performances kept the game low in scoring. McKenzie Wagoner went to strike out three batters and only allowed the Blue Raiders to cross home once.
Players to watch for on the Mean Green include Kailey Gamble, who leads the conference in homers with 15. Gamble was one of three UNT players named to the C-USA All-Conference First Team, along with Ashley Peters and Cierra Simon. In addition to Gamble, Ashley Peters is one of the top pitchers in the conference behind teammate McKenzie Wagoner. Peters and Wagoner sit at second and third in ERA with 1.58 each. Peters and Wagoner have pitched over 120 innings, with Wagoner sitting at a record of 12-8.
