CHARLOTTE – UAB Softball defeated Charlotte in shutout fashion on Saturday Afternoon, splitting the series with a 2-0 victory at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium. The Blazers improved to 16-7 in C-USA Play and 29-22 overall.
"Obviously, that was a big win for us in a series with a lot riding on it. Proud of how we played our brand of softball today and applied pressure." Said head coach AJ Daugherty on the team's performance today.
The Green and Gold's Caitlin Russell pitched a complete game and collected her tenth win in the circle. The Blazers totaled nine hits on the day, and Sierra Frazier racked up both RBIs.

The game began with Lauren Brock hitting a leadoff single to start, putting the Blazers on base early. After a lineout to left field from Bella Wiggins, Brock swiped second to put UAB in scoring position. The second baseman would advance to third on a passed ball to push the Blazers closer to home plate. With Sierra Frazier at bat, she delivered a sac fly RBI to send Brock across home to give UAB the 1-0 lead.
Caitlin Russell walked two batters in the bottom of the first, but the UAB defense kept Charlotte from scoring to bring the game to inning two. In the second, Mackenzie Droddy delivered a single to left field, but nothing came of it as the Blazers did not capitalize off the hit. Russell then entered the bottom of the second with a strikeout, and gave up one hit, however UAB kept Charlotte at bay to hold them from scoring.
The pitcher's duel continued through two more innings, before the Blazers saw an offensive opportunity. Olivia Valbak delivered a double to left center. Reese Lowery entered for Valbak and advanced on a sac bunt from Droddy. Lilly Crowe reached on a fielder's choice before Lowery was tagged out at home. The Blazers tallied one more hit but were unable to score.
UAB and Charlotte went hit for hit, gathering one hit apiece from the fifth to the sixth inning. With a final inning left in the seventh, the Blazers maintained their 1-0 lead, the Green and Gold's Hannah Miles delivered a leadoff single through the left to put a Blazer on base before Brock laid a sac bunt. With Miles on second, Frazier had a two-out base hit to send Miles across home plate to give the Green and Gold a 2-0 lead.
The Blazers closed the bottom of the seventh with a three-up-three-down to split the series with a shutout victory.
