UAB Blazers Host FAU for Final Home Series

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Blazers (16-34, 7-20) will welcome the Florida Atlantic Owls (31-22, 14-13) to Young Memorial Field for the final home series of the year. The series will start on Thursday, May 18 and end on Saturday, May 20 with Senior Day.

UAB enters the weekend sitting with the second-best fielding percentage in C-USA with .977. The Blazers still fall towards the bottom of the overall conference standings (9th) while FAU falls amongst the three teams who also sit with a 14-13 record in 5th. UAB and FAU sit 5th and 6th (respectfully) in the overall ERA standings with 5.21 and 5.42.
UAB BLAZERS
The Blazers are coming off a win over Middle Tennessee on Sunday by a score of 6-2 but dropped the series to the Blue Raiders. Carson Myers threw a career-high eight innings to secure the win while holding MTSU to only two runs on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts in UAB's win.
Gavin Lewis Jr. had a breakout series against the Blue Raiders. Over the three games, Lewis Jr. batted .363 with two home runs, five RBI and two walks with three stolen bases including two in game one of the series. Several Blazers made clutch defensive plays over the weekend including one from Logan Braunschweig and Darryl Buggs who both robbed potential home runs from MTSU.
Braunschweig continues to lead the team offensively with a .327 batting average and has the most runs (27), hits (52) and stolen bases (15). After the weekend seven Blazers have collected at least one home run including Christian Hall who leads the team with six. Braunschweig and Hall both post a slugging percentage of .400 or better (.421 and .418, respectfully).
Starting Rotation:
UAB's starting rotation for this weekend will be Brooks Walton, Blayze Berry and Carson Myers. Walton (3-6, 4.58 ERA) is coming off a loss at Middle Tennessee after he allowed three runs – only one earned – on five hits through seven innings on the mound. Berry (2-3, 4.42 ERA) spent seven and one third innings on the mound during his last outing and allowed four runs – three earned – on six hits but received a no decision. Myers (3-5, 3.57) threw a career-high innings pitched (8) and allowed only two runs on four hits and six strikeouts. Myers still leads the pitching staff with most strikeouts (70).
FAU OWLS
The Owls' offense is led by Nolan Schanuel who post a .452 batting average and leads the team in runs (65), hits (80) and home runs (18). Following Schanuel are Jackson Ross (.348) and Dylan Goldstein (.318).
FAU will start CJ Williams (2-1, 2.84) on Thursday and Tyler Murphy (1-0, 5.28) on Friday with Saturday's pitcher to be announced.
UAB AND FAU HISTORY
Since 2014, FAU has a slight lead over UAB in the overall record (16-12). The two programs met in an elimination game at the Conference USA Tournament where the Blazers fell in seven innings. UAB took the last series against FAU in Boca Raton, Fla.
