UAB Baseball Wins Series Against Murray State

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team (3-4) secured its first series win of the season against Murray State (2-5), 3-2, at the Hoover Met Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 26.
The game remained scoreless through four innings until Murray State took the first lead in the fifth, but UAB answered in the bottom of the inning. The Blazers loaded the bases twice on no hits during the fifth after three batters were hit by pitches, a walk and a single which drove in two runs. Going into the eighth inning the game was tied, 2-2, but UAB scored the winning run off an error by Murray State's shortstop and a sacrifice out to bring in the run.
Brooks Walton started on the mound for the Blazers and threw 5.2 innings, but Tyler O'Clair (1-0), who made his first appearance of the season, received the win after throwing two shutout innings. During his start, Walton allowed two runs – both earned – on six hits with six strikeouts. JC Sewell appeared on the mound for 1.1 innings and allowed no runs on no hits with two walks.
Ben Abernathy (2-for-3) recorded a multi-hit game including a RBI and a sacrifice hit which put the go-ahead runner in scoring position during the eighth inning. Darryl Buggs and Brandon Willoughby also recorded a hit while Willoughby and Peyton Puckett collected an RBI. Three Blazers currently have hitting streaks including Buggs (4), Abernathy (2) and Willoughby (2).

Murray State gets on the board first after Sammons singled to right center followed by a Krizen double down the left field line which scored Gardner who reached on a fielder's choice.

UAB ties the game after Lewis Jr. was hit by pitch followed by a Hall walk and Brown hit by pitch to load the bases. Willoughby was hit by pitch which brought Lewis Jr. home followed by an Abernathy RBI walk.

The Racers tie the game after Mercer homered to right field.

Bottom Eighth
The Blazers take a one run lead after Willoughby reached on a throwing error by Murray State's shortstop. Puckett grounded out to second while Braunschweig, who came on to pinch run for Willoughby.

UAB will travel to Troy for a mid-week game on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 P.M.
