MBB Sinks No. 19 Florida Atlantic

BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball took down No. 19/20 Florida Atlantic, 86-77, to snap the Owls' 20-game winning streak. Eric Gaines led all scorers with 21 points while shooting 10-for-11 from the free throw line.
The Owls (21-2, 11-1 C-USA) led by six after the first six minutes, the largest lead that the visitors would gather. Nick Boyd and Vladislav Goldin each scored 10 points for Florida Atlantic in the first half.
The Blazers (16-7, 7-5 C-USA) took control of the contest late in the first half. UAB closed the second half on a 14-2 run, led by six points and two assists from Jordan Walker. All nine UAB players that entered the game scored at least three points in the first half. The Blazers held a 43-30 advantage at the break.
Florida Atlantic responded to open the second half. FAU cut the 13-point Blazers lead to just three points over the first 3:30 of the second half with a 12-2 run. UAB answered right back with a 7-0 run of its own. Eric Gaines' steal and fast break layup put the Blazers back ahead by double digits.
Jordan Walker made his mark on the game in the second half. He knocked down jumpers on back-to-back possessions midway through the second half to give UAB its largest lead of the night at 68-52.
Late in the game, the Owls made a final surge, cutting the UAB lead to just seven points. The Blazers were able to respond, as KJ Buffen lobbed the ball to Trey Jemison for an alley-oop to regain the momentum. The Blazers closed it out for an 86-77 victory.

- UAB defeated a ranked opponent at Bartow Arena for the first time since beating North Carolina (12/1/13).
- The Blazers picked up their first win over an opponent ranked in the AP poll since beating then-No. 13 Iowa State in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
- All nine players that entered the game for UAB scored at least three points in the contest.
- The win snapped FAU's 20-game winning streak.
- Eric Gaines finished with 21 points for his second career 20-point game.
- Jelly Walker scored 13 points and dished out six assists in his first game back from injury.
