BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team suffered a 13-2 loss to Old Dominion on Friday night in the first of three games this weekend at Young Memorial Field.
The loss drops the Blazers to 21-12 overall and 7-6 in league play, while ODU improves to 24-8 overall and 7-6 in C-USA.
Josh Sears hit his 10th home run of the season and Christian Hall extended his hitting streak to 13 games, but ODU scored 13 runs on nine hits and broke the game open late to seal the victory.
After a 10 pitch first inning from Jackson Reynolds to open the game, ODU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a pair of solo home runs from Matt Coutney and Robbie Petracci.
The game remained 2-0 until the fifth when an unfortunate series of events allowed ODU to take a 5-0 lead. Reynolds would have retired the Monarchs in order, but a dropped third strike with two outs allowed the inning to continue. Reynolds then walked three consecutive batters, followed by a two-RBI single from Carter Trice as ODU scored three unearned runs.
Josh Sears got UAB on the board in the bottom of the sixth with his team-high 10th home run of the season. His two run shot also scored John Marc Mullins who was hit by a pitch, making the score 5-2 in favor of Old Dominion.
Old Dominion then added three runs on three hits in the seventh, and tacked one three more in the eighth on two hits to claim an 11-2 lead. Coutney would add his second home run of the game and his 14th of the season in the ninth as his two run shot made the score 13-2.
UAB and Old Dominion will conclude their three game series on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
