UAB Visits Old Dominion on Sunday

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team will travel to Norfolk, Virginia, for a brief one-game road trip at Old Dominion on Sunday. Sunday's tipoff is set for 1 p.m. CT and will be carried live on ESPNU.
The Blazers (19-5, 9-2 C-USA) posted back-to-back victories in their recent home stand at Bartow Arena, winning the pair of matchups by an average of 21.5 points per game. UAB continues to top Conference USA in ESPN's BPI (40), KenPom (42) and NET (42) entering Sunday's game against the Monarchs.
UAB holds a 23-15 overall record against Old Dominion (9-15, 4-7 C-USA), but the Monarchs hold an 8-6 advantage in the series in Norfolk. The Blazers split with Old Dominion in Bartow Arena this past season, marking UAB's only defeat at home in conference play in 2020-21.
UAB LATELY
UAB (19-5, 9-2 C-USA) had five Blazers reach double figures in scoring for the first time since its 103-29 victory over Division III opponent Millsaps in Thursday's 21-point win over the Golden Eagles. Jordan Walker (25), KJ Buffen (12), Jamal Johnson (11), Quan Jackson (11) and Trey Jemison (10) helped lead a balanced attack for the Blazers offensively, dominating inside with a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint. Jackson recorded the second double-double of his career in as many games with 11 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals in Thursday's win. Walker joined the 1,000-point club with 25 points, 13 of which came in the second half on an efficient 3-of-4 shooting from the field and 5-of-5 shooting from the foul line. Walker also tied a season-high with eight assists. Johnson helped serve as a spark plug for the Blazers off the bench, drilling three 3-pointers to finish with 11 points and four rebounds in just 14 minutes.
OLD DOMINION LATELY
Old Dominion (9-15, 4-7 C-USA) has dropped three straight after reeling off back-to-back home victories over Charlotte and Marshall on Jan. 29 and Feb. 3, respectively. The Monarchs hold a 6-4 record at home in Chartway Arena this season, which includes double-digit conference victories over UTSA, Charlotte and Marshall. Senior forward Austin Trice not only leads the Monarchs in rebounding, but he also ranks first in Conference USA with 12.1 rebounds per game in league games. C.J. Keyser (14.6), Trice (12.6) and Kalu Ezikpe (11.2) have all averaged double figures in scoring through 24 games this season. The Monarchs excel in getting to the free throw line, ranking first in Conference USA with 461 total free throw attempts. The Monarchs, however, struggle from behind the arc, ranking last in the C-USA in 3-point field goals made per game (4.5) and third to last in 3-point field goal percentage (29.8).

WHAT A RUN FOR JORDAN "JELLY" WALKER
After becoming the first UAB player in program history to earn Conference USA Player of the Week honors three times in one season on Monday, Jordan "Jelly" Walker continues his campaign for Conference USA Player of the Year. Walker has now scored 20 or more points in eight straight games, breaking a UAB single-game scoring record with 42 points in last Saturday's win over Middle Tennessee. The Port Washington, New York native has been lights out from behind the 3-point line and at the free throw line since the turn of the new year, knocking down 46 3-pointers and going 42-of-45 from the free throw line since UAB's game against UTSA. So far, Walker is the only Conference USA player this season to earn Player of the Week honors three times. His career performance on Saturday, Feb. 5, also helped him garner national attention with ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas naming Walker one of his two National Players of the Week.
STACKING UP NICELY IN THE LEAGUE
UAB ranked first among Conference USA programs in a number of different team statistical categories entering C-USA play on Dec. 30, including scoring offense (82.2 points per game), scoring margin (21.2), steals per game (12.4) and turnover margin (8.6). Entering Saturday's slate of league games, UAB ranks first in the league in field-goal percentage defense (40.2%), scoring margin (17.0), scoring offense (81.4), steals per game (10.6), total steals (254), turnover margin (6.5), turnovers forced per game (17.46) and fewest turnovers committed per game (10.9).
SECOND-HALF SURGE
The Blazers have outscored opponents by double digits in the second half 11 times this season, including a +37 margin against Millsaps, a +35 margin against Alabama A&M and a +30 margin against Mississippi Valley State. The Blazers dominated FIU in the second half of UAB's win on Jan. 13, outscoring the Panthers 46-22 in the final 20 minutes. UAB also outscored Saint Louis 36-24 in the second half of its big road win over the Billikens. The Blazers posted back-to-back double-digit positive scoring margins in the second half of both of their wins during their recent homestand, outscoring Middle Tennesse by 13 and Southern Miss by 21.

Blazer men's basketball games are set to air on 100.5 ESPN JOX 2 with David Crane and Murry Bartow on the call.
In addition, Crane will host Blazer Sportsline every Tuesday beginning Dec. 28. The show takes place live from Iron City Grill in downtown Birmingham and features men's basketball head coach Andy Kennedy and women's basketball head coach Randy Norton.
