UAB Falls 81-72 at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – The UAB men's basketball team fell 81-72 at Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon at Chartway Arena.
After taking a 37-30 lead with a converted and-1 opportunity from Quan Jackson, the Monarchs closed the first half on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 37-37. Old Dominion then opened the second half on a 13-6 run, stretching its lead to 50-43 with 15:25 remaining.
The Blazers (19-6, 9-3 C-USA) countered Old Dominion's run with a 7-2 run of their own, pulling the game within two at 52-50 when Jordan Walker finished a driving layup in the paint. The Monarchs, however, responded with an 11-3 spurt to stretch their lead back out to double digits at 63-53 with 6:37 remaining.
UAB cut Old Dominion's lead to seven points at 78-71 with 58 seconds left when Jackson finished with a layup in transition. The Monarchs would then ice Sunday's game at the line, hitting three free throws in the final minute.
The Blazers struggled from behind the arc in Sunday's setback, going 4-of-19 from 3-point range. The Blazers also only forced seven turnovers, which was a season low.
Rongie Gordon tallied a season-high nine points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. Gordon tallied seven of his points in the opening 20 minutes, accounting for seven of UAB's 11 bench points in the opening half.
Walker continued his streak with 20+ point performances, setting a new UAB record with nine straight games with 20 or more points. He finished Sunday's game with 20 points and seven assists.
Jackson finished Sunday's contest with 17 points and eight rebounds, finishing just two boards shy of his third straight double-double.
The Blazers exceled at the foul line in Sunday's loss, going 22-of-26 (85%) from the charity stripe. Walker led the Blazers at the line, converting 9-of-10 foul shots.
UAB will return to Birmingham to host Rice on Thursday night in Bartow Arena. Thursday's tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and will be carried live on Stadium. The Blazers will look to move to 15-0 in Bartow Arena for just the second time in program history.
