Women’s Tennis Falls to Furman, No. 25 Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team opened the spring season this weekend with a pair of challenging teams in Furman and No. 25 Auburn. Both matches were played at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on Auburn's campus.
FURMAN 5, UAB 2
The Blazers came out of the gates by winning the doubles point. After dropping No. 1 singles, Sydney Clarke and Maggie White were 6-3 winners at No. 2. The point was decided on Court 3 with Vanessa Mellynchuk and Alexandra da Silva picking up the win, 6-2.
In singles, Furman got wins from a pair of nationally ranked players on Courts 1 and 4 and 2021 All-Conference members on Courts 2 and 3. On Court 5, Mellynchuk battled Jess Dawson falling in a first set tiebreaker and 6-4 in the second set. UAB picked up its singles points on Court 6 from Maggie White, who was a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 winner over Maggie Pate.
#25 AUBURN 7, UAB 0
The following day, the Blazers returned to Auburn to take on the nationally ranked Tigers. Auburn took the doubles point as well as all six singles matches. UAB did faces a pair of nationally ranked opponents on Courts 1 and 2. Mellynchuk had another close first set, dropping a breaker 9-7 to Georgie Axon.
UP NEXT
UAB will travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama on Jan. 29. The Blazers will play their next two matches in Homewood, facing Samford on Feb. 2 and Central Arkansas on Feb. 5. UAB's home opener is Feb. 6 against Chattanooga at Lakeshore Tennis Courts.
