BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team split its doubleheader with Southern Miss on Saturday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field, falling 1-0 in game one before a walk-off hit from Sierra Frazier clinched a 4-3 victory in game two.
With today's win, the Blazers set the record for most victories in a season at Mary Bowers Field, which was built in 2010. UAB has gone 19-6 at home this season.
GAME 1: UAB: 0, USM: 1
The Golden Eagles broke the Blazers' seven game win streak in the first game of the double header.
UAB (28-18, 14-5 C-USA) was only able to get two hits in the first three innings, but Sarah Cespedes, who started the game in the circle, was able to also hold Southern Miss scoreless while notching three strikeouts.
Parker Conrad, who entered the game in the top of the fourth, was able to keep the Golden Eagles off the board until the sixth inning.
After three straight singles to load the bases, Conrad popped up the next batter before Southern Miss drew a walk to a take a 1-0 lead.
Cespedes re-entered the game with the bases loaded and one out but was able to get the Blazers out of the inning without any further damage.
The bases loaded walk proved to be the winning run as UAB was unable to plate any on five hits.
Conrad (6-4) took the loss, allowing five hits and one run in 3.1 innings of work and striking out two batters.
Cespedes finished the game with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
GAME TWO: UAB 4, USM: 3
UAB was able to get started quicker offensively in game one.
Faith Hegh recorded the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first, a one-out single to center field.
Sierra Frazier plated her with a RBI double, giving UAB an early 1-0 lead.
Jenna Olszewski followed that up with an RBI triple to right field that advanced Frazier home. It was Olszewski's fourth triple of the season and eighth as a Blazer, which ranks as the fifth-most in program history.
UAB held onto its 2-0 lead until the top of the fourth, when Southern Miss hit its first home run of the series, cutting it to a one-run game.
Analyse Petree was able to add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a solo shot over the center field fence, her seventh home run of the season.
Despite UAB holding a 3-1 advantage going into the seventh, the Golden Eagles wouldn't go down easy.
Southern Miss scored its first run of the inning with an RBI groundout, before tying it up on a UAB error and sending the tie game into the home side of the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Hegh was walked before Frazier stepped up to the plate.
She delivered a walk off double to center field, giving UAB the 4-3 win.
This was the second time this season that Frazier has had a game-winning hit. The sophomore catcher also had a walk off hit against Southern Illinois on March 13.
Olivia Valbak (2-0) earned her second victory of the season in the circle, allowing no hits in the seventh inning.
Kachel finished the day allowing two hits and one earned run in 4.1 innings, while Jaycee Cook pitched 1.2 innings of relief, allowing two hits and one earned run.
The Blazers will wrap up the series tomorrow at 12 p.m. Sunday is also Senior Day for our six graduating seniors: KK Crocker, Emily Kachel, Jenna Olszewski, Parker Conrad, Amy Woodham and Analyse Petree.
