BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team splits its doubleheader with UTSA on Saturday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers won game one, 6-4, before falling in game two, 14-3.

UAB moves to 15-29, 8-5 C-USA on the season, while UTSA sits at 18-19, 10-12 C-USA.

GAME ONE – UAB 6, UTSA 4

Tyler O'Clair picked up his fourth win of the season after tossing six innings, allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Brady Greene (3) earned his second consecutive save.

UTSA started the scoring in the first inning on back-to-back doubles by Griffin Paxton and Dylan Rock for the 1-0 lead.

UAB answered with five unanswered runs. In the second, Ian Ladner led off by reaching on an error. J Paul Fullerton hit his second home run of the season over the left field wall to take the lead, 2-1.

In the third, singles from Jess Davis and Colton Schultz put runners on the corners with one out. Zack Davis sent his first triple of the season down the right line to bring in both runners. Z. Davis was brought home on a sacrifice fly from J. Fullerton to increase the lead to four, 5-1.

The Roadrunners answered with a run in the top of the sixth. Joshua Lamb hit a double and advanced to third on an error. Shea Gutierrez had a sacrifice fly to bring in Lamb to cut the Blazers' lead to 5-2.

John Marc Mullins reached on an error by the pitcher to leadoff in the bottom of the sixth. Four batters later, Mullins came home on a passed ball to bring the score to the final tally of 6-4.

GAME TWO – UAB 3, UTSA 14

Jordan Bonk (0-1) had his first career start, going 2.1 innings and allowed five hits and five runs, two of which were earned.

UTSA scored five runs in the second inning, led by a bases clearing double from Gutierrez for the 5-0 advantage.

Z. Davis led off the bottom of the second with a double. Singles by Ladner and J. Fullerton brought in Z. Davis to cut the lead to 5-1.

The Blazers cut the lead to two in the third on two runs and two hits. Schultz singled to bring in Joseph Kiel from third and Ladner hit a sacrifice fly to score Chandler Simpson.

The Roadrunners plated seven runs in the fifth, led by a grand slam by Nick Thornquist and a two-run shot by Gutierrez to extend their lead to 12-3.

UTSA added two runs in the seventh close out game three of the series, 14-3.

The series concludes on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.

Fans, including Gold Card holders and students, will not be permitted to attend home baseball games played at Young Memorial Field. Attendees will be limited to the player pass list and limited premium spaces.
