SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The UAB softball team opened up its four-game series with UTSA with an 8-5 victory on Friday night at Roadrunner Field.
Amy Woodham (5-8) earned the victory in the circle, while Parker Conrad notched her second save of the season.
Despite a two-hour lightning delay in the bottom of the first, the Blazers came out hot when play resumed.
JoJo Readeaux got things started for the Blazers in the top of the second, hitting a two-run home run to left field, scoring Faith Hegh. It was Readeaux's second straight game sending a ball out of the park.
Analyse Petree added to the Blazers' lead in the third, hitting a three-run shot to left field that scored Sierra Frazier and Jenna Olszewski, putting them up 5-0. It was Petree's fourth home run of the season, and her first since March 10 against North Alabama.
Petree was able to earn another RBI in the top of the fifth, scoring Frazier with a sac fly.
Woodham, who had not given up a hit through the first four innings, had to weather the storm as the UTSA bats got hot in the fifth.
The junior walked the leadoff batter, before the Roadrunners strung together three back-to-back hits.
Parker Conrad, who came in with the bases loaded in the fifth, struck out the side to end the inning.
UTSA was able to plate five runs on four hits and one error in the frame, cutting UAB's lead to 6-5.
After the Blazers went down in order in the top of the sixth, Conrad worked her magic again, striking out the side in the bottom of the inning.
Petree and Hegh got things going offensively in the seventh with back-to-back singles. Makalah Mitchell, who pinch ran for Petree, was able to add an insurance run, scoring on a passed ball.
Readeaux was able to plate the last run of the night with an RBI groundout that brought home Hegh, bringing the final score to 8-5.
Conrad struck out eight of the 10 batters she faced in three innings of work, allowing just one hit.
Woodham, who went four innings in the circle, allowed three hits, four earned runs and struck out six Roadrunners.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
