UAB Baseball Holds Off Late Rally by Kennesaw State

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team held off a four-run eighth inning rally by Kennesaw State to get the game three win, 8-7, Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.

"It takes courage and guts to win games like that," head coach Perry Roth said. "Our team responded well all day today from the first to last innings. It was a total team win."

Kennesaw State (7-4, 0-0 ASUN) got the bats going early as they took the 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning on two singles. UAB (6-4, 0-0 CUSA) answered back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning on five hits from Jess Davis, Caleb Floyd, Jake Killingsworth, John Marc Mullins and Chandler Simpson for the lead, 5-2.

In the top of the second, the Owls would add a run on a wild pitch to bring the Blazers' lead to two, 5-3. The Green and Gold brought their lead back to three in the bottom of the fifth on a groundout by Mullins to score Zack Davis.

KSU added four runs in the top of the eighth on one hit and an error to take their second lead of the game, 7-6.

UAB recorded its first hit since the first inning on a single to right field from J Paul Fullerton. In that same inning, Simpson scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at seven. The Blazers reclaimed the lead on error that scored Floyd, 8-7.

Dylan Cunningham, who came in with two outs in the eighth, closed out the game in the ninth to earn his first win of the season. Freshman Carson Knight, who got the start, matched a season-high seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

UAB will host No. 26 Auburn for a midweek contest on Tuesday, March 9 at 6 p.m. at Regions Field. Tickets for the game can be purchased here.
