BIRMINGHAM — It was a pitcher's duel in the series opener between UAB and Indiana State, but the Sycamores came away with the 1-0 victory on Friday at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers fall to 6-9, 0-0 CUSA on the season, while Indiana State moves to 10-5, 0-0 MVC.
Junior Riley Davis pitched a gem, going seven innings with five strikeouts and not allowing a run. Evan Ingram (0-1) took the loss after coming in during the eighth. Jess Davis led the Blazers at the plate, going 2-for-4 and extending his hitting streak to eight games.
Indiana State's starter, Geremy Guerrero, threw eight scoreless innings to improve to 4-0 on the season. Connor Fenlong entered in the ninth to earn his third save.
UAB's first hit of game came in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff single by Jess Davis. The Blazers added hits in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
The game's only run came in the top of the ninth as Diego Gines and Seth Gergely hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with one out in the ninth. Gines would score on a sacrifice bunt from Grant Magill for the lone run of the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, Colton Schultz walked with one out. Zack Davis reached on a fielder's choice, but Schultz was out at second. With two outs, Thomas Johnston came into pinch hit and grounded out to the first baseman to end the game, 1-0.
