BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Department of Athletics and its multimedia rightsholder, Blazer Sports Properties, announced today that Cumulus-owned FM stations WJOX and WJQX will continue to be the radio home for UAB Athletics through the 2022-23 season.
Starting this fall, the 100,000-watt sports station WJOX-FM 94.5 (JOX) will bring UAB fans high-quality game broadcasts for the two-time defending C-USA West Division Championship football team. Additionally, WJQX-FM 100.5 (JOX2) will air all men's basketball games and the one-hour seasonal coaches' shows for both football and basketball.
"We are very excited and proud to continue and extend our partnership with UAB and Blazer Sports Properties," VP/Market Manager for Cumulous Birmingham Bill Gentry stated. "We are pleased to have the hometown team on our stations, and while we know about the success of Bill Clark and the football program, the hiring of Andy Kennedy is going to bring new excitement to the basketball program. We are glad to be a part of it!"
The multi-year extension with Cumulus was overseen by Learfield IMG College and its locally based Blazer Sports Properties team as part of the overall rights relationship.
"We are thrilled to once again have Blazer Athletics on the WJOX family of networks," UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram said. "Giving our fans the ability to listen to these broadcasts on the radio or through their smart devices only continues to grow our brand and enhances the overall gameday experience."
UAB and Cumulus are entering their 15th year as partners. David Crane, The Voice of the Blazers, is entering his 14th year handling play-by-play duties for both UAB football and men's basketball.
The Blazer football team returns 18 starters from last year's squad that won the second most game in school history (9). UAB aims for its third straight C-USA West Division title in 2020 and looks to defend the nation's fourth longest active home winning streak of 18-straight. Click here for football season tickets.
UAB men's basketball enters a new chapter under first year head coach and former Blazer star Andy Kennedy. Kennedy returns to his alma mater where he is the program's second leading scorer. He returns four of his top five leading scorers from last year's team and has added eight new faces to the roster. Click here for men's basketball season tickets.
