ATLANTA – The UAB softball won a pair of games on Sunday with a 7-2 victory over Ohio and a 3-2 walkoff win over Furman to conclude the Buzz Classic at Georgia Tech.
The Blazers had a tremendous opening weekend, finishing with an overall record of 4-1. UAB's only loss was an 8-7 walkoff defeat at the hands of No. 1 Washington.
Redshirt sophomore Sierra Frazier was unstoppable in leading the Blazers to four wins. The Corona, Calif., native batted .563 with three home runs, nine RBI, four doubles and four walks while slugging 1.375.
"Overall it was a really successful weekend," head coach Jimmy Kolaitis said. "We tried to emphasize playing one game at a time and focusing on each inning. The last day of the week is always a grind and we found a way to win both games today. We did a lot of good things this weekend and have a lot of work on. This will be a short week before we head the road as we have a challenging schedule going into next week. I am really proud of this group and we competed this weekend."
UAB 7, OHIO 2
Junior Emily Kachel pitched five innings, allowing just three hits and two runs with five strikeouts, and Sierra Frazier had a bases clearing double which lifted UAB to a 7-2 victory over Ohio.
The Blazers received production from top to bottom as six different players recorded hits, four had at least one RBI and leadoff hitter KK Crocker had four of UAB's seven walks in the contest.
UAB struck in the bottom of the first inning as Jenna Olszewski delivered a bases loaded single to score Crocker.
Ohio took a 2-1 lead in the third inning which was assisted by a few UAB fielding miscues, but that would be all the scoring the Blazers allowed for the rest of the game.
The game winning runs came in the fourth inning when Frazier roped a bases loaded double down the left field line to give the Blazers a 4-2 advantage. UAB then tacked on three more runs in the fifth with an RBI double from Faith Hegh and a two-RBI single from Dylinn Stancil to build a five run lead.
Sarah Cespedes entered in the fifth inning for Kachel and didn't allow a hit in two full innings to secure the victory.
UAB 3, FURMAN 2
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, redshirt senior Analyse Petree hit a walkoff single to give the Blazers a 3-2 victory over Furman.
Sierra Frazier picked up right where she left off against Ohio with an RBI double in the bottom of the first which scored Faith Hegh to give the Blazers an early 1-0 lead.
The game remained scoreless until Natalie Erwin's solo home run in the bottom of the fourth gave the Blazers a 2-0 advantage. It was Erwin's first of the season.
Furman drew even in the top of the sixth with two runs. The inning started with back-to-back Furman singles, and after consecutive putouts, the Paladins scored on an RBI single and then a double steal to even the game.
True freshman Jaycee Cook came in to pitch in the top of the seventh for UAB and held Furman scoreless which set the stage for the Blazers in the bottom half.
Fellow freshman Samantha Bean opened the bottom of the seventh with a single and Dylinn Stancil followed that with a single as well. Following two outs and a walk to Frazier, Petree took the first pitch straight up the middle to give UAB the dramatic victory.
Amy Woodham pitched six innings for UAB and gave up six hits while striking out seven batters.
