Softball to Play Midweek Game at Southeastern Louisiana

BIRMINGHAM β Making a pit stop on its way to Houston, the UAB softball team will play a midweek game at Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday evening. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

UAB (4-1) looks to keep its momentum going after a great opening weekend at Georgia Tech's Buzz Classic. The game at SLU (5-0) is the first of six for the Green and Gold this week.

The Blazers compiled four wins in Atlanta to open the season, including their first win over a Power 5 team (Georgia Tech) since 2016. UAB's only loss was an 8-7 defeat at the hands of No. 1 Washington in walk-off fashion.

There were contributions throughout the entire lineup last weekend, highlighted by reigning Conference USA Player of the Week Sierra Frazier. The sophomore catcher had a monster tournament, piling up a .563 batting average with nine hits, three home runs, nine RBI, four doubles and four walks.

Senior Analyse Petree also had a great week at the plate in her first action back after missing all of last year with an injury. Petree batted .389 with seven hits, two home runs (both coming against Georgia Tech) and she had the walk-off single against Furman to give UAB a 3-2 victory.

It was a collective effort in the circle led by Emily Kachel, Amy Woodham and Sarah Cespedes. Kachel picked up a pair of wins and posted a 2.33 ERA, while Woodham pitched a team-high 15.0 innings with a 1.40 ERA and struck out 12 batters.

Cespedes appeared in four of the five games, pitched nine innings and picked up UAB's only save of the weekend. Cespedes was instrumental in helping UAB erase a 6-0 deficit against Washington with a fantastic relief effort as she left the game with UAB trailing 7-6.

SLU had an unblemished opening weekend at home, posting a perfect 5-0 record with wins over Alabama State, Buffalo (twice), Grambling and UT Martin. The Lions scored 43 runs and only allowed 14 in the five games combined.
